IX Przeworsk Saxophone Festival

Przeworsk, 6 - 8 December 2010

The IXth edition of the festival arouse great interest amongst students and teachers. A record number of participants representing all the important music schools arrived in Przeworsk.

Throughout its IX editions the festival has gained recognition and prestige. It has also become an integral part of Przeworsk cultural event calendar.

In the edition of 2012 for the first time saxophone ensembles of three and more had the chance to present themselves .

The jury comprising:

  • ad. Jacek Delong – Akademia Muzyczna w Łodzi
  • st. wyk. Paweł Gusnar – Uniwersytet Muzyczny w Warszawie

auditioned 57 contestants and 10 ensembles.

The first day of the festival challenge was finalized in Przeworsk Music School auditorium with a wonderful concert of a splendid jazz saxophonist Krzysztof Urbański and a pianist, Łukasz Perk. The musicians presented some of their own music pieces from their latest cd "Urbanki", as well as pieces by John Coltran and William Walton.

On the second day of contest auditions Bernard Steuer from Academy of Music in Katowice gave a lecture entitled "Teachers -their attitude and role in teaching musically talented children how to play a musical instrument."

In the evening part there was a recital of Paweł Gusnar, accompanied by a pianist - Magdalena Wojciechowska-Żak. There was also a guest performance of tenor saxophonist Szymon Nidzworski - a student of Paweł Gusnar at The Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.

The program of the concert included the following works:

  • Claude Debussy - Rhapsody for alto saxophone & orchestra
  • Alexander Glazunov: Concerto for Alto Saxophone in E flat major op.109
  • Robert Schuman – Fantasiestücke (transcribed for soprano saxophone and piano)
  • Francis Poulenc – Trio (transcribed for soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone and piano)

On the third day, apart from contest auditions of soloists IV category, prof. Mieczysław Stachura from Wrocław Academy of Music gave a lecture entitled: "Most common mistakes for students learning to play the saxophone." In addition, as the head of the jury, prof. Mieczysław Stachura reviewed and summed up the contest auditions and the whole IX Przeworsk Saxophone Festival 2010.

Finally, there came the most anticipated moment of result announcement and award presentation for category IV (soloists) and category VI (ensembles).
